On September 20, 2017, Hurricane María pummeled Puerto Rico for over thirty hours. As brutal as the storm was, the real catastrophe was yet to come. Lack of government support left many in the archipelago without electricity, clean drinking water, food, and medical care for months. Years later, Puerto Rico is still recovering.

Mi María: Surviving the Storm brings together seventeen stories of perseverance and community that ask what it means to be a US citizen in a colonial context, how communities come together in the wake of disaster, and how precarity is exacerbated for those on the frontlines of the climate crisis.

El 20 de septiembre de 2017, el huracán María azotó Puerto Rico durante más de treinta horas. Tan brutal como fue la tormenta, la verdadera catástrofe estaba aún por llegar. La falta de apoyo gubernamental dejó a muchos en el archipiélago sin electricidad, agua potable, alimentos y atención médica durante meses. Años después, Puerto Rico todavía se está recuperando.

Mi María: Sobreviviendo la Tormenta reúne diecisiete historias de perseverancia y comunidad que se preguntan qué significa ser un ciudadano estadounidense en un contexto colonial, cómo las comunidades se unen tras un desastre y cómo la precariedad se agrava para aquellos en la primera línea de la crisis climática.

 

Maxy Survives the Hurricane/ Maxy Sobrevive el Huracán

Maxy is a happy puppy who lives with Clarita and her family in a house filled with laughter and music on the island of Puerto Rico. On sunny days, Clarita and Maxy go to the park or on adventures under the flamboyan tree. On rainy days, they stay inside and play games or read books.

But one day, Maxy sees everyone rushing around, putting things in boxes. Someone say, “María is coming!” That night, Hurricane María roared ashore; there was thunder, lightning and lots of rain. Maxy was terrified! Finally, the power went out and the house and everything around it was completely dark. The next day when they went outside, they saw destroyed homes, flooded roads and knocked-down trees—including their beloved flamboyan! There was no electricity for a long time, and everyone had to stand in long lines for food, gas and even water to drink.

Eventually, power is restored and Maxy thinks everything is going to be okay. Until one day, the clouds start to gather and he hears thunder and whistling winds. Trembling and whining, he races under the bed! Eventually, and with the help of loved ones, Maxy—like many children who go through natural disasters—learns to overcome his fear and appreciate the benefits of rain.

Maxy es un perrito feliz que vive con Clarita y su familia en una casa llena de risas y música en la isla de Puerto Rico. En días soleados, Clarita y Maxy van al parque o se aventuran bajo el árbol de flamboyán. En días lluviosos, se quedan adentro y juegan juegos o leen libros.

Pero un día, Maxy ve a todos corriendo de un lado a otro, poniendo cosas en cajas. Alguien dice: “¡María viene!” Esa noche, el huracán María rugió en la costa; había truenos, relámpagos y mucha lluvia. ¡Maxy estaba aterrado! Finalmente, se corta la electricidad y la casa y todo a su alrededor quedaron completamente oscuros. Al día siguiente, cuando salieron, vieron casas destruidas, carreteras inundadas y árboles derribados, ¡incluido su amado flamboyán! No hubo electricidad durante mucho tiempo, y todos tuvieron que hacer largas filas para conseguir comida, gasolina e incluso agua para beber.

Finalmente, se restaura la electricidad y Maxy piensa que todo va a estar bien. Hasta que un día, las nubes comienzan a juntarse y escucha truenos y vientos silbantes. Temblando y llorando, ¡corre debajo de la cama! Finalmente, y con la ayuda de sus seres queridos, Maxy—al igual que muchos niños que pasan por desastres naturales—aprende a superar su miedo y a apreciar los beneficios de la lluvia.
