Oral History Lab (OHL)
The Oral History Lab (OHL) at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez is dedicated to recording, preserving, and disseminating oral histories from across the Puerto Rican archipelago in support of climate justice and the interrelated sociopolitical issues of environmental racism and institutionalized colonial practices.
Building upon the momentum of two prior oral history projects——“Mi María” and “Sheltered in Place”——an interdisciplinary team of faculty from the Department of English, Film Certificate Program, and General Library were awarded a Digital Humanities Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in order to build the OHL.
Housed in the General Library and partnered with the Graduate Research and Innovation Center (GRIC), the lab consists of an interview room and four video editing rooms as well as an extensive digital repository that utilizes Omeka S and DSpace to host collections which are fully findable through the application of bilingual metadata. In addition to these physical and digital spaces, the lab also has a complete set of professional filmmaking equipment, which is available for loan to students enrolled in documentary filmmaking courses. Undergraduate-level courses in writing and filmmaking are the backbone of our project.
The OHL model of connecting three humanities-based campus assets allows us to rethink storytelling for social justice strategies by integrating oral history, archival practices, and multimodal dissemination as a means of circulating the critical information held in eyewitness narratives to internal and external communities. Our process is rooted in decolonial and antiracist methodologies, and we apply trauma-informed approaches to each undertaking.
Primary objectives of the lab include extending the dignity of listening to members of our community through narrative transactions that also provide essential witnessing in the aftermath of disaster and amplifying narratives of creative responses to disaster among local, national, and global communities, all of whom are stakeholders in mitigating the climate crisis.
Current projects focus on expanding our undergraduate coursework and community workshops, building community archives, hosting mass-listening events, and developing data curation strategies—with attention to integrating high-tech, low-tech, and no-tech outputs—as well as collaborations with other centers such as the Archivo de Respuestas Emergencias de Puerto Rico, the Interdisciplinary Center for Innovative Theory and Empirics (INCITE) at Columbia University, and the Humanities Action Lab at Rutgers University-Newark.
The OHL mission includes a dedication to collaborating with mutual aid organizations, citizen scientist groups, cultural sites, community centers, and STEM-focused research projects on our campus and beyond as a means of recording essential stories; using humanities-centered methodologies to gather qualitative, community-based datasets; and build multimodal outputs that amplify experiential knowledge for multiple audiences. This lab is the first of its kind in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, and the $500K award received from the NEH is the largest grant from this federal organization that has been received in the archipelago. The OHL is also one of only three projects to be funded in Puerto Rico and one of the few to receive the full amount of funding possible under the Saving the Humanities American Rescue Plan Program (SHARP).
Laboratorio de Historia Oral (OHL, por sus siglas en inglés)
El Laboratorio de Historia Oral (OHL, por sus siglas en inglés) en la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Mayagüez se dedica a grabar, preservar y difundir historias orales de todo el archipiélago puertorriqueño en apoyo a la justicia climática y las cuestiones sociopolíticas interrelacionadas del racismo ambiental y las prácticas coloniales institucionalizadas.
Construyendo sobre el impulso de dos proyectos previos de historia oral — “Mi María” y “Sheltered in Place” — un equipo interdisciplinario de profesores del Departamento de Inglés, el Programa de Certificado de Cine y la Biblioteca General recibieron una Subvención de Humanidades Digitales del National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) para construir el OHL.
Ubicado en la Biblioteca General y en colaboración con el Centro para la Investigación e Innovación Posgrado (GRIC), el laboratorio consta de una sala de entrevistas y cuatro salas de edición de vídeo, así como un extenso repositorio digital que utiliza Omeka S y DSpace para alojar colecciones completamente localizables mediante la aplicación de metadatos bilingües. Además de estos espacios físicos y digitales, el laboratorio también cuenta con un equipo completo de producción cinematográfica profesional, que está disponible para préstamo a los estudiantes inscritos en cursos de grabación de documentales. Los cursos de bachillerato en escritura y cine son los pilares de nuestro proyecto.
El modelo de OHL que conecta tres activos del campus basados en humanidades nos permite repensar las estrategias de narración para la justicia social al integrar la historia oral, prácticas de archivo y difusión multimodal como un medio para circular la información crítica contenida en narrativas de testigos presenciales a comunidades internas y externas. Nuestro proceso está centrado en metodologías decoloniales y antirracistas, y aplicamos enfoques informados por el trauma a cada proyecto.
Los objetivos principales del laboratorio incluyen extender la dignidad de escuchar a los miembros de nuestra comunidad a través de transacciones narrativas que también proporcionan testimonios esenciales tras los desastres y amplificar narrativas de respuestas creativas a desastres entre las comunidades locales, nacionales y globales, todas las cuales son partes interesadas en mitigar la crisis climática.
Los proyectos actuales se centran en expandir nuestros cursos de bachillerato y talleres comunitarios, construir archivos comunitarios, organizar eventos de escucha masiva y desarrollar estrategias de curaduría de datos, con atención a la integración de resultados de alta tecnología, baja tecnología y sin tecnología, así como colaboraciones con otros centros como el Archivo de Respuestas Emergencias de Puerto Rico, el Interdisciplinary Center for Innovative Theory and Empirics (INCITE) en la Universidad de Columbia y el Humanities Action Lab en la Universidad de Rutgers-Newark.
La misión del OHL incluye la dedicación a colaborar con organizaciones de ayuda mutua, grupos de científicos ciudadanos, sitios culturales, centros comunitarios y proyectos de investigación centrados en STEM en nuestro campus y más allá como un medio para grabar historias esenciales; utilizando metodologías centradas en humanidades para recopilar conjuntos de datos cualitativos basados en la comunidad; y construir salidas multimodales que amplifican el conocimiento experiencial para múltiples audiencias.
