This March marked a significant step for the Oral History Lab (OHL) at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, as we embarked on a new and exciting partnership with the Centro de Apoyo Mutuo Jíbaro, located in Lares. This center, which breathes new life into a formerly abandoned school building from the Puerto Rico Department of Education, is now a hub of community support and resistance.
Our community liaison, Zaira Arvelo, made several visits to the center throughout the month to engage with our new partners and gain a deeper understanding of their vision and needs. These visits are part of our ongoing commitment to support community-driven projects that preserve and celebrate local culture and history.
The Centro de Apoyo Mutuo Jíbaro is spearheading an ambitious oral history project aimed at documenting the invaluable wisdom of the elders in Lares. These elders are not just keepers of history; they are active practitioners of indigenous agricultural methods and have been staunch defenders against both natural disasters and the ongoing pressures of colonial influences that threaten their way of life and sovereignty.
This project isn’t just about recording history; it’s about empowering a community to tell its story on its own terms, ensuring that the rich traditions and knowledge of the past are carried forward into the future. By focusing on the elders’ experiences and insights, the project will highlight the resistance and innovation inherent in the community, providing a blueprint for sustainability and self-sufficiency that can inspire others.
At the OHL, we are thrilled to be part of this vital initiative. It underscores our mission to not only study history but to actively participate in the making of it by empowering communities to preserve their unique narratives. This partnership with the Centro de Apoyo Mutuo Jíbaro is just one example of how we are working to expand our impact and reach into communities that have much to teach us all.
