On September 21, 2011 the Southwestern Education Society (SESO), a local PK-12 school, inaugurated a 60 kW photovoltaic system. The system has the largest capacity of the western region of Puerto Rico.  Dr. José Colucci, PE from the Department of Chemical Engineering, leads the UPRM team that provides technical support to this and other green projects in the area. The students enrolled in the ChEg design courses with doctor Colucci were able to tour the facilities.

Drs. Miguel Vélez and Efraín O’Neill, both from electrical engineering, collaborated in the project.  Their involvement is in part supported by CIVIS, a Department of Education funded sustainable energy initiative.

The project has received media attention from local newspapers and radio broadcasts.
