Subject: Theory Post-doc in shear banding/microfluidics: Leeds
School of Physics & Astronomy, University of Leeds
EU FP7 European Soft Matter Infrastructure (ESMI) project
Closing date: 2 May 2011
A post-doctoral position is available for up to 20 months (depending on budgetary constraints), to study
shear banding in yield stress and activated fluids, near boundaries in microfluidic geometries. This is part
of the EU FP7 European Soft Matter Infrastructure (ESMI) project, which comprises 16 academic and
industrial partners across Europe. The goal of the project is to establish trans-national access to state of
the art research facilities in soft matter that are distributed across Europe, including rheology, scattering,
nanoparticle synthesis, electron microscopy, confocal imaging, and computer simulation.
You will study and derive theories of very slowly relaxing and `activated’ complex fluids such as
emulsions, concentrated polymer melts and solutions, and pastes, with a specific focus on the interaction
of surfaces in microfluidic and other devices with the non-linear properties of fluids, including yielding,
shear banding, and flow-induced phase transitions. You will perform analytic theory and/or computer
simulation, as appropriate to your skills and the needs of the science. There is the opportunity for
considerable interaction with partners in Twente (Netherlands), FORTH (Crete), and KU Leuven
(Belgium).
You will collaborate and interact widely with members of the Network, including experimentalists,
theorists, and simulators. You will have a PhD in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, or
a related discipline, together with experience in theoretical or computational soft matter physics, ideally
with a background in hydrodynamics.
