As a partner in the Humanities Action Lab translocal climate justice research project, Climates of Inequality, members of the OHL traveled for the second part of a research exchange with the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee (UWM) that includes community partners from the UWM, Peace Garden Project MKE, The Middle Ground Inc, and Groundwork Milwaukee.
The first part of the exchange took place in March when the OHL and our community partners at Colectivo PerlArte and Centro de Apoyo Mutuo Jíbaro (CAMJI) in Lares welcomed the Milwaukee team to La Perla and Lares to learn more about climate justice work being done in these two sites.
In the second part of the exchange, the Milwaukee partners hosted the OHL (Ricia Chansky, Bryan Ramos, and Zaira Arvelo Alicea), Colectivo PerlArte (Lorel Cubano and Caitlin Serrano), the CAMJI in Lares (Pluma Bárbara Moreno), and the Associate Director of the Humanities Action Lab, Wilmarie Medina Cortés.
On May 15, the Puerto Rico team joined the Milwaukee partners in the morning for a community-led visit to various gardens, including Home Gr/own Unity Orchard, Home Gr/own Scholars Park, and Antoine’s Garden for a sound bath and watercolor painting session. In the afternoon, the groups visited local black-owned businesses at Sherman Phoenix and learned about food deserts and how local initiatives like Tricklebee Cafe fight to address them.
On May 16, the morning began with a community walk that started at the Cherry Street Community Garden where Rick Roszkowski explained gardening initiatives for elder community members (raised beds, paved paths, benches) and children (composting snacks, greens’ tastings) and concluded at the Lynden Hill Garden and Tiefenthaler Park. In the afternoon, the Puerto Rico and Milwaukee teams gathered at the Amaranth Cafe to participate in an open conversation about solidarities across distances with community members, academics, artists and historians from Milwaukee’s Southside and Northside.
Como parte del proyecto translocal de investigación sobre justicia climática del Humanities Action Lab, Climates of Inequality, miembros de la OHL viajaron para la segunda parte de un intercambio de investigación con la Universidad de Wisconsin en Milwaukee (UWM), el cual incluye socios comunitarios de la UWM, Peace Garden Project MKE, The Middle Ground Inc, y Groundwork Milwaukee.
La primera parte del intercambio tuvo lugar en marzo, cuando la OHL y nuestros socios comunitarios en Colectivo PerlArte y el Centro de Apoyo Mutuo Jíbaro (CAMJI) en Lares dieron la bienvenida al equipo de Milwaukee en La Perla y Lares para aprender más sobre el trabajo de justicia climática que se lleva a cabo en estos dos espacios.
En la segunda parte del intercambio, los socios de Milwaukee recibieron a la OHL (Ricia Chansky, Bryan Ramos y Zaira Arvelo Alicea), Colectivo PerlArte (Lorel Cubano y Caitlin Serrano), el CAMJI en Lares (Pluma Bárbara Moreno) y a la directora asociada del Humanities Action Lab, Wilmarie Medina Cortés.
El 15 de mayo, el equipo de Puerto Rico se unió por la mañana a los socios de Milwaukee para una visita guiada por la comunidad a varios huertos y jardines, incluyendo Home Gr/own Unity Orchard, Home Gr/own Scholars Park y Antoine’s Garden, donde participaron en una sesión de baño de sonido y pintura en acuarela. En la tarde, los grupos visitaron negocios locales afrodescendientes en Sherman Phoenix y aprendieron sobre los desiertos alimentarios y cómo iniciativas locales como Tricklebee Cafe trabajan para enfrentarlos.
El 16 de mayo, la mañana comenzó con una caminata comunitaria que inició en el Cherry Street Community Garden, donde Rick Roszkowski explicó iniciativas de jardinería para miembros mayores de la comunidad (camas elevadas, caminos pavimentados y bancos) y para niños (meriendas para composta y degustaciones de vegetales de hoja verde), y concluyó en Lynden Hill Garden y Tiefenthaler Park. En la tarde, los equipos de Puerto Rico y Milwaukee se reunieron en el Amaranth Cafe para participar en una conversación abierta sobre solidaridades a través de las distancias junto a miembros de la comunidad, académicos, artistas e historiadores del lado sur y norte de Milwaukee.
