EPA-ORD/NRMRL-STD-2012-01
Project Description:
A postdoctoral research project training opportunity in the area of Green Chemical Process Evaluation and Design is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Green Chemical Process Evaluation and Design program in NRMRL has many facets that build upon previous work done on Gauging Reaction Effectiveness for Environmental Sustainability of Chemistries with a multi-Objective Process Evaluator (GREENSCOPE). The GREENSCOPE methodology uses a taxonomy of 140 process indicators to evaluate new or existing processes that are grouped into four bases (Environment, Economic, Efficiency, and Energy) to provide a representation of a process or contemplated design to give the user an overall description of process sustainability.
Training opportunities for the participant in this research project may include: connecting online databases, quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) models, simulators, and other tools to GREENSCOPE; performing and describing sensitivity and uncertainty analyses; developing simplified process models for (groups of) chemical process units that include chemical engineering assumptions, scale-up, restrictions on use, etc.; and studying process examples to verify and exemplify the methods developed in the tool.
Deadline for accepting applications: 09-12-2012
