The University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez (UPRM) Chemical Engineering Department is thrilled to announce that Dr. Maribella Domenech, a faculty member in our department, led a groundbreaking research project that launched to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the SpaceX-31 mission on November 4. This pioneering study, funded by the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust, investigates how microgravity affects the growth and anti-inflammatory properties of stem cells.
Dr. Domenech’s work, in collaboration with Rhodium Scientific, aims to uncover insights into cellular behavior in space, advancing knowledge that could transform both space exploration and medical applications on Earth.
We are immensely proud of Dr. Domenech and her team for elevating the research profile of UPRM and contributing to cutting-edge science on an international scale. This mission marks a significant achievement for Puerto Rican science and the UPRM community.
