We are proud to celebrate a major achievement by our faculty member, Dr. Yomaira J. Pagán-Torres, whose work has been published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), one of the most prestigious journals in chemistry.

The publication, titled: “Uncovering the Pressure-Dependent Mechanism of CO₂ Hydrogenation to Methanol on Ga-Promoted Cu/ZrO₂ Using Operando Modulation-Excitation DRIFTS” highlights groundbreaking insights into the CO₂ hydrogenation process to methanol. This work was the result of a collaboration with the Hermans and Nikolla groups and was led by first author Abdullah Al Abdulghani.
This study uncovers the mechanistic pathways by which Ga-promoted Cu/ZrO₂ catalysts convert CO₂ to methanol, offering strategies to optimize catalyst design and operating conditions to improve methanol selectivity. This publication represents an outstanding recognition for our department and showcases the high-level research conducted at UPRM in collaboration with world-class institutions.
