Academic Advising and Professional Counseling
Academic Advising
Academic advising services are offered in the Academic Departments by Student Affairs Officers, Directors, Associate Directors or assigned professors.
These Officers offer advice and semiannual or annual evaluation to students who are in the processes of: enrollment, admission, reclassification, transfer, special permit, readmission, transfers, partial withdrawal, total withdrawal, low academic achievement (probation, suspensions) and graduation . In addition, they are responsible for helping and directing the student in planning their academic program, so that they meet the graduation requirements and can thus complete their academic degree.
Professional Counseling
Professional Counseling services are aimed at promoting the comprehensive development of the student, helping them in their personal, vocational and educational development. For these services, there are Licensed Professional Counselors assigned to the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services of the Dean of Students, assigned to the different undergraduate study programs. Graduate students are served by referrals.
Some topics that Professional Counselors work on are: life and career planning, effective study techniques, teamwork, crisis management, stress management, conflict management, assertive communication, vocational indecision, adaptation to university life, management of time and study habits, among others. Two of the main activities are: Orientation Days for new students and the offering of the UNIV 3005 Course: Introduction to University Life. (http://www.uprm.edu/cms/index.php/page/2046)
