What is R2DEEP?

R2DEEP is a Pre-Engineering Program initiative of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) College of Engineering that provides high school students with university-level distance learning courses in math and engineering, allowing them to earn college credits before graduating high school. Courses are delivered through distance modality by UPRM professors and instructors.

The program aims to increase the quantity and quality of engineering students by combining recruitment, training, and retention strategies to improve student success.

Key Aspects

  • Distance Education: Courses are delivered remotely and online through live, distance-learning platforms.
  • University Credits:Students can earn college credits (up to 22 credits) for courses taken through the program.
  • Pre-Engineering Focus:The program offers courses in mathematics, engineering, and languages to prepare students for engineering studies.
  • Professional Counseling: Academic counseling is provided to R2DEEP program students.
  • Eligibility:High school students (10 through 12 grades) from public, private and homeschoolers with a minimum 3.5 GPA are eligible to apply.
  • Transferable Credits: A+ and B grades can be submitted for transfer credit, while a C grade is reflected on the student’s file but does not affect the GPA.

Program Goals & Benefits

  • Increase the number of students who apply to and are officially admitted to the College of Engineering.
  • Enhance the quality of students who complete engineering programs.
  • Provide high school students with a head start on their university education.
  • Opportunity to experience university courses which enables them to create effective study habits for success in college.
  • R2DEEP promotes student participation in the different summer camps offered by UPRM.

Is R2DEEP only for students who are interested in engineering?

R2DEEP offers university-level credits in mathematics, engineering, and languages to high school students therefore it is open to all disciplines. Students from other academic programs can enroll and enjoy the benefits of R2DEEP courses.

It is recommended that students from other fields of study request an evaluation because some courses may have specific prerequisites.

The academic offer includes:

  • Pre-Calculus I (3 crs) *
  • Pre-Calculus II (3 crs) *
  • Calculus I (4 crs) *
  • Engineering Graphics (2 crs)
  • Computer Programming and Algorithms (3 crs)
  • Introduction to Computer Programming (4 crs)
  • Introduction to Engineering (1 cr) **
  • Basic English Course (3 crs) ***
  • Intermediate English (3 crs) ***

*
Math courses with prerequisites. Students with 604 or less will need to take and approve a math diagnosis test.
A remedial course is available for those needing to reinforce their math background.

**Introduction to Engineering is offered only in the first semester.

*** English courses with prerequisites. For Basic English Course student must have obtained an English Achievement (PAA) score of 569 or less.
