Doctor Maribella Domenech was awarded a $1.4M grant by the National Institute of Health (NIH) for her project titled “Distinct contributions of mesenchymal cell niches in the therapeutic potential of breast cancer cells”. The 4-year project aims to develop predictive cellular models for the therapeutic response of breast cancer. The studies will provide new biological insights into the modulation of tumor cell behavior in response to shifts in the cellular composition of the tumor microenvironment and establish the therapeutic value of strategies targeted to non-tumor cells. A simple culture model is validated for the evaluation of heterotypic interactions and drug sensitivity in triple-negative breast tumor cells using pharmacological inhibitors of the Hedgehog pathway.
