Intereses de Investigación: Broadly, I am interested in symbiosis between fungi and arthropods, their systematics, coevolution, and ecology. I study an obscure group of fungi called Trichomycetes, also known as gut fungi. They are obligate arthropod endosymbionts that grow attached to the lining of the digestive tracts of their hosts. Traditionally, they were thought to be fungi belonging to the Zygomycota, however, my research, using molecular sequence data, has shown that not all lineages of Trichomycetes are true fungi. Rather, some are more closely related to protists that are part of the basal lineage that gave rise to true fungi and animals. My major goal is to understand trichomycetes as an ecological group but within a phylogenetic context. |
