Advising

Two types of advising are currently provided formally to students: academic advising and professional advising. Academic advising is provided to the student mostly through the department’s Academic Advisor under the supervision of the Department Head. Professional advising is provided by the department’s faculty.

Paso 4 - Proceso de Matrícula

Step 5

In this step it is important that you remember the information that it asks for. Your student number, the pin you created when you first entered the portal (you can modify it on your portal), social security and date of birth.

Paso 5 - Proceso de Matrícula

Step 6

Select A (“alta”) to enroll your courses officially. You must know the codifications and sections of your courses previously. They can be found in the portal and in See other information in Step 4.

If you want to remove a course you enrolled, you must choose the option B (“baja”).

If you want to change the section of a course you enrolled, you must choose option C (“cambio”). This way you ensures not to lose the course already enrolled.

Step 7

Confirm your enrollment.

To confirm your enrollment, you must be up to date with the academic calendar as there is a period of time to do this.

When you pay for the enrollments, it is automatically confirmed.

Recommendations:

  • You must have several pre-registrations made before your enrollment turn. The pre-registration is made through its portal.
  • Remember that you should not have more than 5 consecutive hours of class.
  • Remember that your Guiding Students are at your disposal to help you.
  • Be aware of your registration hour and be ready to start the process.
  • In the case of not getting a course, remember that there is a period of adjustment that is found in the academic calendar.

Minor Concentration in Project Management

The Minor Certification in Project Management for engineering students was approved on April 2015. It has two versions, one for students in Business Administration and the other for students in Engineering, Arts and Sciences and Agriculture. This minor certification is administered by the Business Administration Faculty.

Requirements for this certification can be found on Academic Senate Certification 15-37 and here

Master Courses For Undergraduates

Undergraduate students interested in enrolling in graduate courses from the Industrial Engineering Department, must meet the following requirements:

  1. Have a general GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  2. Approve the required courses with B or a better grade. (Refer to the table below to learn about the requirements per course.)
  3. Must be on their fourth or fifth year depending on their curriculum.
  4. It is recommended for the student to be enrolled in 12 credits or less when registering in a graduate course, to not exceed 15 credits total for that semester.

*Course ININ 6005 can be used to satisfy the requirement of ININ 4027 for BSIE students in the 2016 and 2023 curriculum; it is not counted towards professional elective. Students with ININ 4027 approved are not allowed to register ININ 6005, and are advised to consider ININ 6046 as a professional elective.

*Course ININ 6026 can be used to satisfy the requirement of ININ 4018 for BSIE students in the 2016 curriculum; it is not counted towards professional elective. Students in the 2023 curriculum are not allowed to register this course. Students with ININ 4018 or ININ 5025 approved are not allowed to register ININ 6026.

Academic Advising

Academic advising is mostly seen as an administrative issue. Students are guided through their curriculum complying with all the requirements and university regulations in a reasonable amount of time. The basic academic advice includes the recommended course load, sequence, and the available elective courses. Academic advising starts as soon as students enter the program as freshmen.

Every year, usually during the last week of July, orientation sessions are held for entering freshman students. There they are given basic information regarding their curriculum and course sequences, university regulations, and administrative procedures. After that, and throughout the student’s academic career, the office of the Department’s Academic Advisor is available for students to just walk in or make an appointment for obtaining individual advice.

At the request of the student, the Academic Advisor evaluates the progress made toward the degree and gives the students advice as to how to best handle deviations from the recommended course load or sequence.

There is always a one week period before registration dedicated to academic advising. The Academic Advisor sends e-mails to each student at the IE Program every semester, one month prior to registration week. The purpose is to invite students to academic advising. It is not required for the Academic Advisor to be an Industrial Engineer.

Professional Advising

Professional advising is seen as a career planning issue. It is considered that this type of advice is best given by an Industrial Engineer.  This is why this matter is handled by the department’s faculty. Professors make available their regular office hours for students to walk in and request professional advice.

Students are provided help dealing with issues related to possible career paths and professional interests within the Industrial Engineering Profession. This way, students get advice as to their choices of professional and free electives, professional experiences, projects, and so on. A “One-on-One” activity is held in the IE students’ study room (II-222) prior to registration where professors give academic as well as professional advice to students.

Other professional advising activities going on are:

  1. “Orientation on Opportunities for Graduate Studies” given to graduating students.
  2. Individual orientation with the Department Head or the Associate Department Head.
