Every story deserves to be told accurately, compassionately, and thoughtfully—in every language. In a time when misinformation spreads rapidly and facts are routinely distorted, the Transgender Law Center (TLC) and the National LGBTQ Task Force remain committed to that core principle. That’s why we are proud to announce the release of our journalist guides in Spanish, a significant milestone in our work toward ensuring that Spanish-speaking reporters have culturally rooted, accessible resources to tell trans stories with dignity, nuance, and power.
Spanish is one of the most spoken languages in the U.S., including among TLC’s base. Yet Spanish-language media outlets and journalists, particularly those working with immigrant and trans communities, often do not receive the same resources and support available to other journalists. It is not uncommon for reporters to work alone, with minimal editorial support, or within a saturated media environment where misinformation and political attacks are plentiful.
These guides are not simple word-for-word translations. We know that even the best translation can lose cultural context and deeper meaning. That’s why we collaborated with Bilingual Libélula Editorial and Translation Services toward translations deeply rooted in Spanish-speaking activist movements—people who live this work—to ensure these resources reflect the social justice values at the heart of TLC’s mission. These are tools developed by and for Spanish-speaking communities in the U.S., grounded in lived experience rather than simply adapted from English.
This initiative builds coalition support and closes the information gaps that exclude our multilingual communities. It reflects a deep commitment to collective liberation, affirming that our struggles are not separate but shared. Trans people, queer people, immigrants, and Spanish-speaking communities—here and around the world—are in this together. Building understanding and solidarity, we share a commitment towards a future where we are all able to live freely and authentically.To do this, we need to understand that our needs are aligned. We must acknowledge that each other’s concerns are one and the same. The issues that trans people advocate for—being able to legally live as our authentic selves, not being subject to laws designed to punish our existence, and receiving life-saving medical care—are also issues that migrant communities feel strongly about. Both communities are being targeted today, and both need our solidarity.
Through this partnership, TLC and the Task Force have manifested a long-term vision for the future of the progressive movement. By combining efforts and sharing expertise in Spanish-language media, we’ve been able to create something much more powerful than we could on our own.
Earlier this month, we released the first five Spanish-language journalist guides at the National Association of Hispanic journalists (NAHJ), directly engaging journalists through a panel presentation and booth. Up next, we will be at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention, another critical space to connect directly with journalists and get these resources where they’re needed most.
As we move forward, we are committed to supporting Spanish-speaking journalists, centering trans voices, and providing tools that truly serve our communities, not as an afterthought but as a part of our collective liberation work.
