Why the Humanities Matter to STEM is a series exploring how deeper engagement with the arts and humanities can strengthen higher education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics – and help shape a more creative, critical and socially responsive future for the university.
Contributors this fall include MIT professor and award-winning author Alan Lightman, UPR-M professor and INH Director Jeffrey Herlihy-Mera, and Itziar Molina Sangüesa of the University of Salamanca. Podcast collaborators include Matías Cafaro, Ivette Cruzado and Baruch Vergara of the UPR-M, and Brooklyn / Mayagüez artist Yasmín Hernández.
Across the series, leading scholars in STEM and the Humanities examine what becomes possible when intellectual traditions meet. The conversations will explore the connections between STEM education and language, art, philosophy, visual thinking, ethics and culture, as well as the social and human consequences of technological change.
Each article in University World News will be accompanied by a podcast episode that takes the conversation further, bringing scholars together to ask interdisciplinary questions that challenge familiar boundaries between fields of knowledge.
The future of the university and the future of society depend on our ability to think across disciplines, see beyond established boundaries and understand our fields through multiple ways of knowing, imagining and making meaning.
