In honor of the 25th anniversary of the Mayagüez Children’s Library there will be an exhibition on display at the library’s celebration at the Mayagüez Cultural Center on Sunday, February 26 from 3-4 pm. It will be on display at the library in March & April.
Founded in 1992 by Ms. Jackie Winters, the Mayagüez Children’s Library was the first independent, public and bilingual community library specializing in providing services to the children and youth of Puerto Rico. Ms. Winters arrived in Puerto Rico in 1991 with her family, seeing that there was not a public library with good educational material, she set out to start one of her own. The library had very modest beginnings, it started with a donation of two bags full of books from Atlanta, Georgia. Since, its collection has grown, they house approximately 20,000 fiction and non-fiction books in both English and Spanish. In 2004, it was recognized by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the First Lady of the United States, Mrs. Laura Bush, for its excellent service to the community.
