English Department Fundraising and Food Drive for Come Colegial

After the passing of Hurricane María and its devastating effects on communities across Puerto Rico, the UPRM initiative Come Colegial, dedicated to ensuring low-income students receive alimentary support on a routine basis, urgently requires support. Its warehouse of supplies was nearly depleted after distributing emergency provisions to students prior to the natural disaster. On a regular basis, the organization serves 60-70 students per semester. After the Consejo General de Estudiantes (General Student Council) conducted an online survey last week, however, nearly 600 students reported they would require alimentary assistance in the wake of María. Solidarity with the Brigada Solidaria del Oeste

In the wake of Hurricane María, the Department of English would like to recognize and affirm the significant work being accomplished by the Brigada Solidaria del Oeste/the Solidarity Brigade of the West (https://www.facebook.com/brigadasolidariaoeste/) on a daily basis. This grassroots organization, comprised of a collective of distinct groups across the western coast of Puerto Rico, has taken a hands-on, pro-active approach to address the resulting humanitarian and social crisis. Meet Gabriel Romaguera

Meet Dr. Gabriel Romaguera, a Colegio Alumni from the English’s Department Bachelor’s in Literature and Master’s in English Education programs. After his time in Colegio, he went to the University of Rhode Island to study a PhD in English and Cultural Studies. He defended his dissertation this past march. Before going into a career in English he contemplated studying math, but he decided that he could be more creative and do more with an English degree. On Thursday, August 17 at 10:30 am, Drs. Catherine Mazak and Leonardo Flores will be offering an orientation for its new and experienced graduate students. This orientation will not be yet another drill on rules, regulations, the Graduate Handbook, and Certification 09-09, or our TESOL Certificate, but a practical guide to successfully navigating your graduate studies towards your future career goals. Welcome to the English Department, Prepas!

Welcome to your new home at UPRM! The English Department is currently home to about 200 undergraduate students, 50 graduate students, 30 tenured & tenure-track faculty, 8 adjunct faculty, and 3 administrative staff members. Our administration consists of the following: Dr. Leonardo Flores, Interim Director, oversees the entire operation of the English Department. Dr. Mary Sefranek, Interim Associate Director, is in charge of the undergraduate students and directs the Orientation Committee.
